Use the same currency for every amount. The excess is in your rental terms; the counter price is what the desk charges to cut it to zero.

Rental car insurance, explained
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is usually included in the price, but it comes with an excess (deductible): the amount you still pay if the car is damaged. It can easily be over $1,000.
At the counter, you'll be offered extra cover that cuts the excess to zero. It's convenient but often costs a lot per day, so it's worth deciding before you arrive.
Third-party liability covers damage you cause to other people and property. Check the minimum included in your rental, especially for long road trips.
Before you drive away, photograph every side of the car and the fuel level, and keep the photos until your deposit is returned.
FAQ
What is the excess on a rental car?
It's the amount you still pay if the car is damaged or stolen, even with the basic Collision Damage Waiver. It's often $1,000 or more.
Should I buy zero-excess cover at the rental desk?
Only if the price makes sense for you. Work out the total for your rental and compare it with the excess you'd be removing.
What is separate excess insurance?
A policy you buy before the trip that refunds the excess if you have to pay it. It's usually cheaper than the desk, but you pay first and claim back.
