Data tips for the USA
- Navigation on a road trip uses very little data. Streaming music in the car is what adds up.
- Coverage can drop in national parks and rural areas; download offline maps before you go.
- Uber and Lyft are standard in cities and need a data connection to book.

FAQ
How much data do I need per day in the USA?
Most travelers use around 1.2GB per day with maps, messaging, social media and some music. Light users can get by on a few hundred MB, while heavy video streaming can push past 3GB a day.
Does Google Maps use a lot of data?
Hardly any. Navigation uses roughly 5 to 10MB an hour, and offline maps use none at all.
Should I get an unlimited eSIM?
Only if your estimate is above ~3GB per day or you rely on hotspot. Many "unlimited" plans slow down after a daily cap, so check the fair-use policy.
How can I use less data abroad?
Download maps, playlists and shows on Wi-Fi before heading out, turn off auto-play and background app refresh, and upload photos at the hotel.
