Phone and data tips
- Google Maps handles trains and subways well and barely touches your data. Translation apps and photo uploads are what eat into it.
- Free public Wi-Fi exists in many stations and convenience stores, but it often requires sign-up and can be unreliable, so don't plan around it.
- If you plan to watch something on the Shinkansen, download it on hotel Wi-Fi the night before.
